Karen Gillan and Kaitlyn Dever’s names become (tenuously) linked to Batgirl…

We know that a Batgirl movie has been in development for sometime at Warners/DC with Joss Whedon attached pre-Justice League and the latest being the character is likely to appear in Matt Reeves’ upcoming Batman movie first.

And while we’re hearing very little officially at the minute, two actresses in as many days have become attached to the role, even if not officially, and both would be superb choices.

Now, before we go on, yes, these are both while actresses (Batgirl has traditionally been while) and yes, I know that Jeffrey Wright, a Black actor, has been cast as her father, James Gordon in the upcoming movie, but fans will recall that in the comics pre-new 52, Barbera was adopted, which could allow for her to be white. And, I would guess too that, if they decided to go a different way, her mum could be white, so this is definitely something that could play out.

First up is Kaitlyn Dever. The young star has really come into the spotlight in the last couple of years with roles in Booksmart and Unbelievable, but I’ve been a fan for a few years now, being a fan of Last Man Standing in which she plays Eve Baxter, a sassy, funny and tough girl who, honestly, would be perfect for the role and would wholeheartedly get my vote.

Now, there’s nothing officially attaching the star to the role, it has been noticed that co-writer Mattson Tomlin and director Matt Reeves have started interacting on Twitter which often means something is afoot… of course, it’s just speculation, but if there’s something to it, then it’s a cracking idea.

On top of this, it seems that Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Who and Jumanji star Karen Gillan has also thrown her gauntlet in the ring and said Batgirl would be her dream project:

“Batgirl would be cool for that, as well. My favorite film in that world, my favorite one is The Dark Knight. I just love the way that one is directed so much. So, I would just love to work in that world, as a director. Come on, DC. Look over this way.”

And while this was a off-the-cuff reply during an interview, Bargirl comic writer Gail Simone has heartily endorsed her as Barbera Gordon AKA Batgirl:

Honestly, Gillan would also be a great choice for the role, having proved that she is funny, smart and kicks ass in Guardians of the Galaxy and Jumanji, but she may be too old for the gig if they introduce Barbera as the teen she usually is in the comics… however, if they go later into her career? Count me in…

Thoughts? I wanna hear ’em…
