While we’re all extremely excited to see Jared Leto’s Joker and Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad adaptation later this year, we’re equally as intrigued by the looming shadow of Batman.
It’s been known for quite some time that Ben Affleck’s Caped Crusader would be appearing in Suicide Squad, but the specifics of his role were obviously concealed.
Affleck himself was asked by USA Today (via Squareeyed) about what the fans can expect and although he kept true to honouring his “mile long” nondisclosure clauses, he described it as really exciting: “It felt like I have such a cool cousin,” he said.
“This thing that is so awesome is somehow related to me, and that was really exciting because it started to feel like a constellation of things, and I’ve never had that feeling.”
Affleck also spoke about his role as Bruce Wayne in the highly-anticipated Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which is the film that will really set the DC Extended Universe in motion. The Oscar-winning star said his Batman is experiencing something of an “existential crisis.”
“He’s a guy who had been through that experience already for many years and was kind of burnt out and asking himself what the point of it all was and going through an existential crisis,” he said.
“Batman is covered up by a suit and sometimes a car and sometimes a lot of vehicles and weapons, whereas Bruce Wayne is much more naked — it’s just you and a suit of clothes.
“You can’t really play Batman because Batman is different things to different people. We project our own things onto the mythology of what Batman is, and he has to be able to be projected upon. With Bruce Wayne, you have to bring something distinct and new and different.”
Talking about Affleck’s appearance in suicide Squad director David Ayer talked to USA Today and revealed: “We made him fight! He’s awesome (as Batman). … You really sense that but for the grace of God he himself would be doing some really foul stuff out in the world.”
We can’t wait t see him in both movies…
Oh and here’s a rather great new image of the Suicide Squad too.
