With the successes of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, now the biggest box office film of all time, it’s not hard to ignore the fact that next year, Star Wars episode VIII is being released.

Benicio Del Toro is going to be joining the Star Wars Universe in Episode VIII. His role has naturally been kept very secretive, however there have been rumours of him in a villainous role.

Hitfix (via SWU) learned minor details about his role from the man himself. Upon being asked when he starts shooting Benicio replied: “I’m traveling to England to shoot sometime in the spring.”

He also talked about director Rian Johnson: “I’m looking forward to working with Rian Johnson too,” He said, “[he] was the one that reached out to me and had the idea of me playing the character that I’m gonna play.”

Upon being asked the pivotal question about who his character really was and if he was a villain, Del Toro, quite professionally, kept schtum about it: “You know, I’m not supposed to say” He said , “but that’s what’s out there, so I’m not gonna try and fight it.”

It’s interesting that he believes he has to fight this image. Benicio has played many dark and/or villainous characters in his time and it was naturally assumed he’d be on for this. However, with Kylo Ren, Supreme Leader Snoke, General Hux and the First Order still very much alive, albeit slightly shaken, it begs the question of what Benicio would be if he was evil.

He may be the Jabba the Hutt type of character, a gang lord or the mob boss that has a great hatred for Han Solo and the Falcon.

Does him wanting to fight it mean he could be a good guy, or a bad guy turned good, or something more complicated. We just cannot know and it’s likely we won’t know until next year.

Although, the image below has been floating around the internet and we like the idea of his as Grand Admiral Thrawn that we’re just going to leave it here…
