Look everyone’s going to make this joke (and in the case of total film it has already been made), so I’ll get it out of the way. Brett Ratner is producing a Blockbuster… A film about the origins of Tetris.

Let me clarify, I don’t mean that he is telling the story of why the blocks are falling. He is producing a film about how the game was made, and the life of its creator, Alexey Pajitnov.

The story of the creation of Tetris is a truly fascinating story, with so many twists and turns, that it is ripe for the transition to the silver screen. For example, because the game was created in the Soviet Union, Alexey didn’t see any money from the game, until the 90s. Most of the game’s funds went directly to the Russian Government.

While I very much enjoy the concept of this film, I am not sure how I feel about Brett Ratner’s involvement. I will freely admit that I am not his biggest fan, especially after X-Men: The Last Stand. However, with a premise this good, I feel that it could be worth seeing. Colour me cautiously optimistic, for the moment.
