Before I get into this, I think you should know that the 1986 Frank Oz-directed Little Shop of Horrors is one of my all-time favourite movies and the soundtrack is always playing in my house or car as my daughter has also adapted it as one of her go-to movies, so another remake is not something I await with open arms.
And yes, I know it’s a musical and has several versions already, but I feel it has already been done perfectly and, as such, don’t feel it need another adaptation.
Nevertheless, a new versions IS in the works. So, what do I know?
And now word is that Pose star Billy Porter is likely to be the new voice of the killer plant Audrey II – honestly, I know little of his work, but he’ll need to be pretty great to top the great Levi Stubbs in the role.
Adding to this, there’s a lot of other casting rumours floating around with Lady Gaga apparently set pick up from Ellen Greene to play Audrey and everyone from Zac Efron to Joseph Gordon-Levitt rumoured to play Seymour, the role made famous by Rick Moranis – making me think they may have missed the point of Seymour.
One piece of casting that does sound interesting however, is that is Chris Evans apparently being sought to play Orin Scrivello, the maniacal Dentist (my daughter’s favourite character) brought to life so wonderfully in ’86 by Steve Martin.
While this is all still rumoured, I wonder how the themes of the story – with songs like ‘Suddenly Seymour’ for example – will hold up in the modern world… it’s unlikely it’ll be approved to have Audrey being beaten by her boyfriend, only to be saved by the true love of her life. But who knows?
I’ll be watching with morbid curiousity but with The Arrowverse’s Gerg Berlanti set to direct, I would be shocked if this even comes close to the movie so many fell in love with 33 years ago.
