Charlize Theron has addressed the rumours that she had a fractured working relationsgip with Tom Hardy during Mad Max: Fury Road.

Theron and Hardy took the lead roles in Fury Road, but rumours have constantly circulated that the pair clashed over Hardy’s method acting.

Addressing the “clashes” they supposedly had during a gruelling filming schedule, Theron admitted to sharing a “struggled” relationship with the Briton but it ultimately helped enhance the animosity between their two characters, which lead to producing a better film.

“From what I hear, he’s not like that on every movie – I hear he’s had good experiences,” she told the Wall Street Journal (via Squareeyed), “Maybe the movie is what it is because we struggled so much with each other, and those characters had to struggle so much with each other. If we were chum-chum, maybe the movie would have been 10 times worse.”

Theron previously opened about her ‘feud’ with Hardy in an interview with Yahoo Movies back in 2015 when she was promoting Fury Road.

“We f–kin’ went at it, yeah. And on other days, he and George [Miller, the director] went at it,” she reveals. “It was the isolation, and the fact that we were stuck in a rig for the entire shoot. We shot a war movie on a moving truck — there’s very little green screen. It was like a family road trip that just never went anywhere. We never got anywhere. We just drove. We drove into nothingness, and that was maddening sometimes.”

George Miller also said their on-screen relationship mirrored the “trajectory” of their off-screen one: “I’m not saying that they were seething right through, but the trajectory of the characters can’t help but seep into the work. When they first meet each other, they’re trying to kill each other. As the two characters come together out of necessity and rather reluctantly, they have to find a degree of trust. And to some extent that was the trajectory of their relationship as well.”

Hardy shared his thoughts on Theron in 2014 when asked about the reported rift: “I think she’s f***ing awesome. I think she’s incredible. I think she’s one of the most talented actresses of our generation”, he told Esquire.

Hardy left Theron a note at the end of filming that read: “You are an absolute nightmare, BUT you are also f***ing awesome. I’ll kind of miss you. Love, Tommy.”
