Cloverfield 2 – or 4 from a certain point of view, I suppose – gets director and heads into production

September 23rd, 2022 by Marc Comments

We reported back in July that a direct Cloverfield sequel was in the works (here) and now we have new details on it.

Cloverfield 2 – technically it could be Cloverfield 4 as we’ve had 10 Cloverfield Lane and The Cloverfield Paradox which are loosely related to the iconic first 2008 movie – will pick up after the devastation of New Tork by a massive monster that emerged from the ocean.

The first movie introduced the world to director Matt Reeves and was one of JJ Abrams’ first major introductions, so it’s pretty big news; it was also a found footage adventure which this one is rumoured to not be (here).

The sequel will be directed by I Came By’s Babak Anvari with a script from The Batman’s Joe Barton and it will be produced by original movie director Reeves and writer Drew Goddard as well as Abrams.

As with the other Cloverfield entries, this movie will be kept a complete secret until we’re sitting in cinemas watching it… won’t it be great to have THAT feeling?

10 Cloverfield Lane, left, was the last time I remember something movie-related really taking by surprise as, when the trailer dropped, no-one had any idea it was happening.

One of the best things about the first movie was the full experience with the lore and marketing taking the movie to a whole new level – if you’re confused then you can have fun jumping into this video and this one – that is still being broken down and pondered almost 15 years later with 10 Cloverfield Lane and The Cloverfield Paradox both exploding the mythology with their related, yet unrelated approach.

It’ll be fun to see what this new movie brings to the lore… I can’t wait to find out.

More as and when we get it, folks.
