Could the Shazam! movie be going into production without Dwayne Johnson as Black Adam?
Well, yes, actually.
With DC having announced two mystery projects in 2020, the first expected on February 14th while the second appearing on June 5 (An untitled DC animation feature has also been added to the studio’s schedule and is slated to drop in June 2018 – Gotham By Gaslight, perhaps?) speculation has already begun as to what they might be with money being on it being revealed this weekend at San Diego Comic Con and it seems that the Sahzam! movie is in the fray.
Johnson has been attached to the Shazam! movie(s) as the anti-hero (villain) Black Adam since 2014 (here) when the movie was still thought to not be part of the DC Cinematic Universe but now it seems that he may not be in the first movie at all.
The rumour comes from The Wrap’s Umberto Gonzalez in the following Twitter back and forth wherein he confirms the movie is set to begin production in February next year:

I’m hearing SHAZAM⚡️ goes into production February. Maybe one of today’s new DCEU dates could be that film. RT!

Unless Dwayne isn’t in this film that production info is wrong

He is not in it.

Now, while many fear this is a bad sign and Johnston has left the DC Universe, it’s more likely that he’s filming elsewhere and can’t step up to this one and we already knew that he was signed up to two DC movies and one was a Black Adam movie (here) so it may just be that they plan on setting up Shazam! before Black Adam in the cinematic universe which would make sense.
All it really means – if true – is that Black Adam won’t be the first villain seen in the Shazam! movies.
We also know that Johnson has already teased that we’ll see Black Adam sooner than expected (here) so we reckon there’s a big cameo coming up in the DC movies soon.
The story about his non-involvement was also reported by Variety’s Dave McNary who, like we already believe, wrote that he won’t be in the first movie but WILL still be in the Cinematic Universe moving forward.
So what do you all think? Is the movie in trouble? Is the Rock out? Let us know…
Shazam will smash into theaters on April 5, 2019
