DISCUSSION: Is JK Simmons set to appear in Sony’s Morbius movie as J Jonah Jameson?

October 24th, 2019 by Marc Comments

Ok, so this is more of a discussion than news… just so we’re clear.

A movie news source on Twitter has dropped what is potentially a really big big of news in the world of comic book movies. They are reporting that JK Simmons will be in the upcoming Morbius: The Living Vampire movie (starring Jared Leto) as… J Jonah Jameson!

Whhaaaaaaaatttttttt?

Right, so you will all remember that Simmons played Jameson in Sam Raimi’s Spider-man trilogy in the 90s and was  – and still is – the most comic accurate casting in any movie ever (come at me). Of course, when the Raimi movies ended Jameson was forgotten, and didn’t appear in the Andrew Garfield Spidey movies or the first MCU adventure, Homecoming.

But then, earlier this year, in Spider-man: Far From Home in a post-credits scene, Jameson – played by Simmons – appears and the comic book fans community comes together for one, big hurrah!

And now, over to Sony.

So, you may all know by now that Sony and Marvel had a bit of back-and-forthing over Spider-man recently but eventually worked it out that Tom Holland would be in the MCU at least twice more as Spidey but could ALSO appear in Sony’s Spider-man movies.

This was, of course, big news because this means that, unofficially at least, Venom is part of the MCU as will all upcoming Sony Spider-man-related movies. You may also recall that in Venom, as in the comics, one of the astronauts on the ill-fated trip that brings Venom and the other Symbiotes to earth was piloted by James Jameson…. JJ’s son! And we never find our if the son dies in Venom or survives.

So, this means that JJ Jameson is, even if he doesn’t appear in Moebius, a connective tissue between the MCU and Sony’s movies. Jameson could hold Venom responsible for what happened his son and may hold a vendetta against him Spider-man.

This makes me wonder if Sony and Marvel were working on a connected story before all this ‘will he/won’t he’ went public. We here at FTN have long speculated that they have been.

Whatever happens, there’s an undeniable connection between the two universes now… and it feels right that it’s JK Simmons’ J Jonah Jameson that gets to pull it all together.

How’s that for a conspiracy?

Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
