Donnie Yen to headline Kung Fu movie based on 70s TV series

February 3rd, 2024 by Marc Comments

If you’re a fan of Donnie Yen – and who isn’t? – this is exciting news as the Hong Kong – and Hollywood – action star looks set to embark on a whole new franchise.

It seems the John Wick and Star Wars star is set to star in a movie based on the 1970s TV series Kung Fu.

The movie will be produced by 87North and Universe Pictures with John Wick and Deadpool’s David Leith producing.

The original series starred David Carridine “as a master martial artist who fled China after his master was murdered. He wandered the Old West helping the downtrodden and weathering rampant racism while eluding assassins trying to kill him. He was a peaceful man until provoked, which happened at least once an episode”.

“Donnie Yen is both an immensely talented actor and an action film legend, and it is a privilege to have a true martial arts master leading this global film,” said Leitch, “With Donnie in place as our leading man, it will be a thrill to collaborate with him, our creative partners, and Universal in reimagining this beloved story for the big screen.”

Chad Stahelski to oversee John Wick and Highlander universes on Film, TV and beyond

I’m all in for this – anything with Yen, really – but I’d love to see his character Caine’s story continued from John Wick Chapter 4 and I also think there’s a lot of story to be told for his character Chirrut Imwe from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, so I’d like to see more of those characters first, but I’m certainly not complaining about Kung Fu.
