Well, of all the movies I didn’t expect to be interested in in the coming months, The Toxic Avenger would have been top of the list.
But, here we are… a new Toxic Avenger movie and this time it’s from Legendary Entertainment, picking up from the multiple movies, games, animated series and more that come when Toxic Avenger came from Troma Films in the 1980s.
A staple of cult gore classics, the original movie focused on a janitor who fell into a vat of toxic waste, returning as the titular (anti) hero, however, this time out, the creature is layed by Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage and is his own new version of the Lloyd Kaufman creation.
Directed by Green Room’s Macon Blair, the movie sees Peter Dinklage playing “downtrodden janitor Winston Gooze who, after falling into a vat of toxic waste, becomes none other than The Toxic Avenger. This timely reimagining is up to its eyeballs in environmental themes as Winston goes up against the evil forces of greed and corruption to save his son, his friends, and his community.”
The movie also stars Elijah Wood, Julia Davis, Taylour Paige, Kevin Bacon and Jacob Tremblay.
Wood, pictured below with Dinklage, plays the villainous Fritz Garbinger who, if you couldn’t guess, is partly inspired by Danny DeVito’s take on Batman villain The Penguin in Batman Returns.
However, fans are assured that just because this is no longer a Troma movie, the horribly over the top violence and gore will be present and correct.
There’s no word when the movie will get released but it will debut at Austin’s Fantastic Fest, which runs between September 21st – 28th, so expect a trailer and word of mouth to reach us soon.
I must admit, this is not a genre I really have any affection for but the cast of Dinklage, Wood and Bacon has me interested for sure,
