A government technician runs into trouble at the house of a digitized person whom he’s been sent to terminate.
Synopsis
It’s 2063. A service truck stops in front of a neglected old house. A government technician gets out and walks to the back where he severs a “Life-Link Cable.” His name is Cal Jenner and he’s here to terminate Mr. Cooper, a digitized person who’s been malfunctioning for years.
Decades ago, scientists discovered how to scan a person’s brain into a computer.
The tech went mass-market and millions were converted into digitized persons. Then, a computer virus wiped out the system, leaving them all infected and malfunctioning.
Inside Mr. Cooper’s living room, Cal finds an inoperative head-cube – a cheap video device that allows digitized people to interact with the real world. Cal finds a working head cube in another room. Cooper greets him and Cal tells him there was a glitch in the system and he’s going to repair him. Cooper gets agitated, thinking he’ll be overwritten and he attacks Cal with a homemade robot. Cal escapes through a window and cuts the power to the house disabling the robot.
Cal reenters the house and finds Cooper’s head cube still on. He tells Cooper the truth about the virus and that he’s there to turn him off because “they passed a law,'” then he pulls the plug.
In a back bedroom, Cal discovers Cooper’s digitized dog. He should power it down and leave it for the salvage crew but decides instead to keep it because as long as it’s still functioning, Cooper will be remembered and loved and missed.
