George Miller is a busy man, with 2000 Years of Longing hitting cinemas and his current work on the production of Mad Max: Fury Road prequel, Furiosa starring Anya Taylor-Joy as the character previously played by Charlize Theron, but he’s already looking to the future, with an eye on more Mad Max goodness.
The writer/director of all the Mad Max instalments, 2015’s Fury Road saw tom Hardy replace Mel Gibson in the titular role he’d played since the first movie in 1979 and was a big hit, financially, critically and, more importantly, with fans of the franchise.
But now he’s hinting that after Furiosa, there’s more, perhaps many more, stories set in that world left to be told, though not necessarily exclusively in movie-form.
“We also wrote, not a screenplay, but almost in novel form, Nico Lathouris and I, what happened to Max in that year before [Fury Road], and that’s something that we’ll look at further down the track later,” he said.
“But in telling each other the story of Furiosa, everything in Fury Road had to be explained. In my mind, I have a backstory of the Doof Warrior, who plays the guitar. How could a blind man, who all he can do is play a guitar, how does he get to survive in a wasteland where everybody is in extremis? How did he come to be there? So we wrote little stories for every character when we made Fury Road.”
We know that a Fury Road sequel, tentatively named The Wasteland, is in production purgatory at the minute, but as a fan of the series, a prequel chronicling what happened between Mad Max 3: Beyond the Thunderdome in 1985 and Fury Road in 2015 would be something many would love to see.
Will Hardy be back as Max? Will Theron be back as Furiosa? At this stage, it’s all up in the air but it’s great to know that Max is still out there, waiting to raise hell in a world that has moved on.
On a related note, Thor star Chris Hemsworth has been spotted on set sporting tow very different looks in the upcoming Furiousa, which has many people wondering if his character will have a flashback at some point in the tale as he’s seen sporting red hair and beard and then grey beard and hair, meaning he goes through a radical change during the events of the movie.
As for who his character is, we have no idea, but we cannot wait to find out.
Check out the two looks below:
