UPDATED: Mamoa responds! Has Aquaman been cast? Is there three other big DC characters set for the Justice League movie?

June 16th, 2014 by Marc Comments

Ok, so remember all the times Jason Mamoa – star of Game of Thrones and, em, Conan – was connected to the role of Aquaman in The upcoming Batman V Superman movie (Like here)? And remember all the times he denied any such thing? Well, it seems he may well have been telling fibs because there’s a very, very strong whisper going around right now that he has been cast in the role.

Hitfix are reporting that he has been cast by Warners and that Zack Snyder is close to signing off on the character design so he can get his role filmed because it’s rumoured to be a small one on this movie but with bigger things to come in future movies.

But, even more interestingly, it seems that, according to the site, not only will the character be in the movie but – we assume – like Batman and Lex Luthor, he will have an issue with Superman and wants to set a few things straight with the last son of Krypton: “We’re hearing that he is not pleased about the World Engine and what it did to the Indian Ocean. He will not have a major role in the film, but he will make an appearance, and it definitely sets him up to return once Snyder gets to Justice League.”

In other news, it looks like we may have another few characters appearing too. As the Justice League movie gets closer and is expected to feature Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and Cyborg with rumours also hinting at Flash and Green Lantern – and now Aquaman – the roster may still be growing.

This popped on Aintitcool:

This is a casting call that indicates Warners are looking to cast J’onn J’onnz (Martian Manhunter)  and Maxwell Lord. Both are founding members of the League in the comics, although Lord later became a cyborg and eventually a super villain in the DC Universe. The image was tweeted by The Wrap and Variety’s Jeff Sneider (@theinsneider) who also said that Darkseid is listed as the villain the League is set to face.

So, Mamoa as Aquaman and the hunt on for the Martian Manhunter and Max Lord? Darkseid waiting in the sidelines? These movies are going to take their running time just introducing characters. But as a man in the (seeming) minority who liked Man of Steel – it’s playing on my iPad as I write – this all excites me rather than troubles me.

In other news, The LA Times are reporting that Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes revealed at an annual meeting on Friday that they plan on developing female characters. It was backed up by DC Comics President Diane Nelson who said a priority right now is appealing to girls. Will this lead to a Wonder Woman standalone movie soon as reported on Thursday (here)? Could be…

Set to open worldwide on May 6, 2016, “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” is based on Superman characters created by Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster, Batman characters created by Bob Kane, and Wonder Woman created by William Moulton Marston, appearing in comic books published by DC Entertainment.

The Justice League is set for May 2017

UPDATE

Jason Mamoa has put the following image on his Instagram page. We think it means he’s not Aquaman. But honestly, at this stage, we’ve no idea what is going on…

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
