It’s long been a talking point about Home Alone with fans wondering what exactly Kevin’s parents did for a living but now we have a (very nearly) definitive answer.
In the classic 1990 Christmas movie, ten-year-old Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) is accidentally left at home when his whole family, led by parents Kate and Peter, played wonderfully by Catherine O’Hara and John Heard, above, and over the course of the next few days, he has to defend his home from villainous thieves Harry and Marv, played by Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern.

The movie is a delight and so is the sequel in which the whole cast returns (ignore any movies past Home Alone 2 as they’re all terrible) but out of the series’ lore, the biggest question what what did Kate and Peter do for jobs that they could afford to live in the home they did AND take his whole extended family on holiday?
Now, Kate’s job is heavily teased in the movie as all around the home we see mannequins, leading many to assume she was a fashion designer, this would also fit in with the brightly decorated home, perhaps? But Peter’s job has never really been addressed – look, these are the kind of things we big nerdy types obsess over in our favorite movies/tv shows etc, ok?
Well, now, director of the movie, Chris Columbus has confirmed the fan theory about Kate and hinted at what Peter did (and didn’t do) for a living.
“Back then, John [Hughes, who wrote the movie] and I had a conversation about it and we decided on what the jobs were. [Kate McCallister] was a very successful fashion designer.
“The father could have, based on John Hughes’ own experience, worked in advertising, but I don’t remember what the father did,” he says before debunking another tongue-in-cheek theory about Peter: “Not organized crime — even though there was, at the time, a lot of organized crime in Chicago.”

Man, we do love when we finally get an answer to something that has bugged – is that the right word? – us for years, especially when it seems we were right!
One last thing, Home Alone fans; in case you’ve not watched 2021’s terrible Home Sweet Home Alone, it’s also revealed what Kevin did after he grew up.
In that movie, while it doesn’t really act as a sequel to the others but rather a soft reboot of the series, we meet Kevin’s brother, Buzz (played once again played by Devin Ratray), who is now a police officer and we also learn that Kevin, likely getting revenge on his brother for all those years of torture, is prank calling him at Christmas.
However, if you look, you’ll see in the background a sign for McCallister Home Security, meaning that after his years of defeating Harry and Marv, Kevin opened a him security business which, as bad as Home Sweet Home Alone is, makes a lot of sense.
So, there you have it. We now know that Kevin’s mum is big fashion designer, his dad is not a crimelord and Kevin no runs a successful home security business.
