James Gunn and The Suicide Squad cast show support for David Ayer’s cut of first movie

August 10th, 2021 by Marc Comments

One of the biggest campaigns in the world of Warners/DC and the DCEU right now is the one to #ReleaseTheAyerCut of Suicide Squad.

Many, ourselves included, thought that releasing the much desired but unseen original cut of David Ayer’s original Suicide Squad movie ahead of the release of James Gunn’s sequel movie The Suicide Squad was a no-brainer… but, alas, it wasn’t to be.

Fans will know that the movie we all got to see in cinemas in 2016 was not the movie writer/director David Ayer had planned or, indeed, made. On the back of the negative reviews of Batman V Superman, Warners panicked and had the movie completely recut, leaving it very different than the planned movie –  they did something very similar with Zack Snyder’s Justice League and when HBO Max put big money into getting that movie finished and released, we all believed that Ayer’s Suicide Squad was a simple choice as we know it was all filmed and assembled… it would be easy to put it on HBO Max and watch the new subscriptions jump on and the publicity for Gunn’s movie go through the roof.

But it never came.

But, Gunn has been a big supporter of the campaign and has recently spoken about his support of Ayer and Ayer’s support of him: “David is an extraordinary filmmaker and an extraordinary human being. So I have his back, but he had my back from the beginning. When it was announced that I was making the movie, he came out immediately in support of me. So he’s really been the gracious one, and we’re very similar in that way, I think.”

However, as someone who has spoken about how much freedom he was granted on his movie, Gunn believes that previous regime is what ruined Ayer’s vision: “There’s always adjusting happening at a studio with individuals and with people making movies. I adjust myself all the time according to lessons I’ve learned, and I think that’s the same for the people at Warner Bros. It is a new regime, as you point out. It’s mostly different people.”

But, excitingly, it’s not just Gunn that’s supportive of the release of Ayer’s vision, with but John Cena and Margot Robbie declaring their support for Ayer cut’s release:

John Cena – Peacemaker:

Margot Robbie – Harley Quinn:

Mayling Ng – Mongal

With this support and the knowledge that the movie is out there finished and waiting to go, I still feel/hope it’s only a matter of time until it releases… thoughts on this?
