James Gunn gives David Ayer hope his cut of Suicide Squad may finally get released

September 19th, 2023 by Marc Comments

Fans of David Ayer and the DCEU will know that the 2016 Suicide Squad movie we got in cinemas was not his vision for the movie but rather the vision of a studio that mangled, cut and reshot the movie extensively.

And over the last seven years Ayer has been very vocal about trying to get the movie released to the fans – after all, DC/Warners gave fans the Ultimate Cut of Batman V Superman and who could forget that we also got The Snyder Cut of Justice League – so why not give us The Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad?

While there has been times over those seven years when it looked like we might get Ayer’s true vision released, it has still not happened, however, he has now got reason to believe that the new regime at DC/Warners might finally let it see the light of day.

Dwayne Johnson pitching Black Adam Vs Justice League Vs Suicide Squad Vs Justice Society?

Now that the DCU – as it’s now called – is being overseen by James Gunn and Peter Safran, Ayer reveals that he has spoken with Gunn about releasing his Suicide Squad: “The interest in my cut being shown seems real and organic,” says Ayer, “and Gunn told me it would have it’s time to be shared. He absolutely deserves to launch his DC universe without more drama about old projects. In a way, I’m chained to this thing. I’m riding a tiger here and navigating this situation the best I can. Life is a very strange journey.”

When Gunn was releasing his sequel, The Suicide Squad, in 2021, he spoke of Ayer’s support for him, saying: “David is an extraordinary filmmaker and an extraordinary human being. So I have his back, but he had my back from the beginning. When it was announced that I was making the movie, he came out immediately in support of me. So he’s really been the gracious one, and we’re very similar in that way, I think.”

Does this mean Gunn’s friendship with Ayer could see the movie having a better chance at release? Gunn has already established that there will be the main DCU and then there will be the Elseworlds movies and shows, consisting of things like The Batman and Joker, could we one day see David Ayer’s Suicide Squad in there too?

Look, full disclosure, I love the theatrical cut of Suicide Squad and have seen it far too many times, so I’m more than ready for Ayer’s vision to be released but will Gunn have the stones? Only time will tell…

Thoughts? I know you have them! Voice-off in the usual ways on FTN’s FacebookTwitter and Instagram

It feels good to be bad…Assemble a team of the world’s most dangerous, incarcerated Super Villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government’s disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity.

U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do.

However, once they realize they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself?
