While there’s currently a writer’s strike impacting on the film and Tv industry in Hollywood, it looks like the upcoming Superman: Legacy will have no such issues.
DC Studios co-head James Gunn reportedly turned in the first draft of his script for his upcoming Superman movie which will kick off he and Peter Safran’s grand plan for DC moving forward, last week.
Gunn will direct the movie as well as write it and we know that, while a cast has yet to be announced, the movie is currently in pre-production with much of it already underway including costumes and production design.
“I completely relate to Superman because he’s everything I am,” Gunn said recently, “He’s somebody who is an outsider who feels like an alien, but also the ultimate insider, because he’s f#@king Superman. And that’s kind of like what I feel like.”
Gunn, who has been tasked with basically rebooting and revitalising the DC universe, has said of the project’s relationship to previous Superman movies: “How can I make it different from the Superman movies that have been made so far, but also have it respect all the Superman movies that have been made so far?”
He added: “All the Supermen have been good, so we just have to add to that story.”
As for who will play the Man of Steel since they foolishly got rid of Henry Cavill (again!), Gunn said: “It’s hard but we’re looking. And we actually have some really great choices, which I’m excited about.
“It has to be somebody who has all the humanity that Superman has, but he’s also an alien; It’s gotta be somebody who has the kindness and compassion that Superman has and it has to be somebody that you’d want to give you a hug.”
He also has been quick to ensure fans that his movie will feature Clark Kent and will not be overriding the pre-existing Ta-Nehisi Coates and JJ Abrams Superman movie which will feature an African-American Superman who will still bizarrely be Clark Kent rather than pre-established Black Supermen Val-Zod or Calvin Ellis: “Those two things are totally unrelated” Gunn says, “That’s an exciting movie. I know that Chantal Nong, who is the executive on that project, is extremely excited about it. So if it comes in and it’s great, which I haven’t read the script, and if the timing is right, that could absolutely happen. That’s totally unrelated. It would be an Elseworlds tale like Joker.”
As someone who loves the Snyderverse, I can say that I’m still very excited to see what Gunn [and Safran] bring to Superman and DC as a whole and, to be honest, I’m pretty excited about a lot of what I have heard so far, so I’ll be watching the development of this movie very, very closely.
Superman: Legacy is slated for release on July 11, 2025, and will tell the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent. Per DC Studios, “he is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old fashioned.
