I feel like one of the rumours I have written most over the years that FTN has been around is that a Beetlejuice sequel is coming… but now it seems like it might actually be happenign.
Last year we reported that Brad Pitt’s Brad Pitt’s production company Plan B had stepped up to bring The Ghost with the Most back to our screens and we also learned that original movie director Tim Burton, while doing press for the then-upcoming Wednesday series, had said that he had a few ideas for a Beetlejuice sequel but wasn’t going to get ahead of himself: “I only know if I’m making a film when I’m actually on the set shooting. I try to go back to the root of everything. It springs from a seed and then it grows, rather than out of these statements. I am working on ideas and things but it’s all very early days. We’ll set how it goes. How’s that for a none answer?”
Around the same time we had heard that Catherine O’Hara, who played Delia Deetz in the original movies, was set to return too (here) although we haven’t heard anything further as of yet, although we expect to hear more very soon of this new rumour turns out to be true.
Keaton fears time for Beetlejuice sequel has passed
Word has it that current it-girl and potential new scream queen Jenna Ortega is set for a starring role in the sequel.
Ortega, who can currently be seen on our screens as Tara Carpenter in Scream VI, has likely won Burton’s favour on the Wednesday series and, in all honesty, she seems like a perfect fit for a Beetlejuice movie.
Word is that Burton will be back in the director’s chair and Micheal Keaton will be returning as Beetlejuice – look, no Keaton, no Beetlejuice, it’s that simple – and that Ortega will paly the daughter of Winona Ryder’s Lydia Deetz from the first movie – does this mean that Stranger Things star Ryder will be back? We really hope so – the actress was certainly keen when she spoke about the potential sequel in 2015 (here).
While there’s no denying that Burton has lost some of the magic from his glory days of Beetlejuice and Batman, the thought of him behind the camera directing Keaton, Ryder and O’Hara in a new Beetlejuice feels a little like a dream come true – Ortega is just the cherry on top.
But is the animated series canon? That’s the big question the fans want answered.
Seriously though, consider us – once again – quietly excited for a Beetlejuice sequel.
Thoughts?
