JJ Abrams says a Cloverfield sequel is in development!

April 30th, 2018 by Marc Comments

Well, well, well Cloverfield fans, do we have two interesting bits of news for you tonight…

At the recent Cinema Con event Paramount Studio chairman/CEO Jim Gianopulos dropped news on several of their upcoming projects including A Quiet Place 2 (here) and Star Trek (here) and one of the other big ones was, as we said above, the Cloverfield franchise.

With everyone waiting for the fourth movie in the franchise, Overlord – after Cloverfield, 10 Cloverfield Lane and The Cloverfield Paradox – we were all in for a surprise… despite all our previous beliefs (here), it seems that Overlord is not, after all, an adventure  in the Cloverfield universe. And how do we know this? Well, JJ Abrams himself appeared on a big screen at the event to tell us.

Describing Overlord as ‘batshit’, Abrams debuted footage from the movie (including a decapitated head that likes to speak) before telling the audience “This is not a Cloverfield movie”.

But, we ear you cry, what is the other piece of Cloverfield news?! You promised two!

Well, we wouldn’t lie to you constant reader…

The second bit of news is that Abrams also revealed: “We are actually developing a true, creative Cloverfield sequel.”

Holy crap! How long have we waited for a sequel to Cloverfield (em, ten years, duh!)?! Will we finally get some concrete answers about the monster and what exactly it is? Where it came from? How all the other movies tie in? Probably not… but we’re still there opening night!

Overlord opens on October 26th.

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
