One of the most exciting things about Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the First Order and just who they are… and what exactly is Kylo Ren? Is he a Sith, an Emperor’s Hand? An Inquisitor, perhaps? Well, read on for the answers…

Director JJ Abrams has been a little chatty about who The First Order are and where the idea behind them came from: “That all came out of conversations about what would have happened if the Nazis all went to Argentina but then started working together again?’ What could be born of that? Could The First Order exist as a group that actually admired The Empire? Could the work of The Empire be seen as unfulfilled? And could Vader be a martyr? Could there be a need to see through what didn’t get done?”

It’s an interesting idea, a new order that sees what went before as unfinished business… but what about the Knights Of Ren? We heard about them a while ago (here) but are they Sith? Fundamentalists? What?

“Kylo Ren is not a Sith,” Abrams said, “He works under Supreme Leader Snoke, who is a powerful figure on the Dark Side of the Force.” Andy Serkis is doing the motion capture and voice for Snoke.

In related news, A Star Wars Story: Rogue One actor Donnie Yen posted the image below on his Instagram (now taken down, it seems) with the message: “I am the force and I fear nothing ???? Going to put this in my company’s display room.”

We’re getting a serious Ralph McQuarrie vibe off these and we love it!

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
