Kathleen Kennedy to step down from Lucasfilm?!

June 7th, 2018 by Marc Comments

Man, it is only three years since we all were celebrating at the thought of more Star Wars movies and, in that world at least, all seemed to be great.

However, fandom is a funny – and unforgiving – place.

When The Force Awakens and Rogue One came out they certainly had their detractors, but we think its’s safe to say that, on the whole, they were well received by Star Wars fans in general.

Next, came The Last Jedi and to say it fractured the fandom is an understatement; the movie really ran to both extremes with fans loving it or despising it and, as we’ve seen in other franchises, bloods rose (no pun intended) and soon the haters were calling for the resignation of Kathleen Kennedy, Lucasfilm President. On top of that, they said they would boycott the next Star Wars movie which happened to be Solo: A Star Wars Story, which is actually a really fun entry in the Star Wars lore.

Now look, I’ll not lie, I really didn’t like The Last Jedi but some of the others here at FTN loved it. I’ve watched it several times and feel the story is weak, the humour largely misplaced and overall it feels like it’s not Star Wars. But am I looking to strangle my friends who DO like it? Of course not… look, I love the DC Cinematic Universe, so none of this is new to me lol – nor did I ever say I’d not be going to see the new movies; I’m an optimist – this one wasn’t great, the next one might be, you know?

But now, after all the pressure on Kennedy, a new rumour  from Ankler, a Hollywood insider, is suggesting that he will indeed throw in the towel:

“While Kathleen Kennedy worked wonders relaunching this property from the abyss of the Lucas prequel trilogy and turning it into a bigger than ever all-devouring cultural force, there has to be more than some thought that it’s time for new blood at the helm. The talk out there is of a September changing of the guards. We’ll see.”

Look, we’re not even going to get into the whole online harassment of actress Kelly Marie Tran who has left social media, with the common belief being because trolls and haters bombarded her with racist, hateful comments. Was the character of Rose a great addition to the Star Wars cannon? In my opinion, no… but this is NOTHING to do with the actress. These people are animals, plain and simple. Honestly, we’ve seen it with other actors, directors and movies in the past… if your fandom pushes you to the point that you become a hate-filled monster then it’s time you took a step back and re-evaluated, well, everything.

However, I digress.

Once more this is just a rumour.

Kathleen Kennedy should not step down because (in many peoples’ opinions) The Last Jedi is bad, In fact, even if Solo is suffering due to this – after all, the massive profit of these movies is largely from fans like you and I going to see the movie several times with our friends and families, so it’s definitely likely this IS the cause – she can still course correct this.

Other factors contributed to the failure of Solo: poor marketing, franchise fatigue… there’s loads of issues here, but the movie’s quality isn’t really isn’t one of them.

However, Star Wars is about Hope. This is a franchise that struggled through the Prequels and had instalments such as The Holiday Special, so to suddenly get so enraged over one (again, in some peoples’ opinions) bad movie is just daft.

Oh, and if you’re not going to see Solo for any of the reasons above but consider yourself a true Star Wars fan, you’re seriously missing out.

May the Force be with you… always.

Also, calm the f#@k down everyone. Jeez.

Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
