With Venom opening last week and, despite poor reviews among critics, performing pretty well, it looks like Sony’s planned Spider-man villain universe is going ahead.
And, honestly, if the movies can create a fun universe then we honestly see no reason why it cannot eventually, as Sony seem to really want – overlap with the MCU.
And it looks like one of the upcoming instalments is not just hoping it will happen but may actually be counting on it.
Screenwriter Richard wenk – The Equalizer, Magnificent Seven – is working on the script for Kraven: The Hunter and he’s hoping to get Spider-man in on the action!
“I’m just starting it. It’s an interesting world and a great character. It’s in the Spider-Man universe – it’s going to adhere very closely to the lore of Kraven the hunter, and he’s going to come face-to-face with Spider-Man,” says Wenk.
“I’m just beginning the process. Because it’s a big IP, Marvel, and a big world, there are a lot of hurdles you have to clear before you can even actually start writing.
“It’s a new world for me, but what’s nice about it is, it’s a very grounded character. He doesn’t have a lot of crazy superpowers. It’s more grounded, which is closer to what I like to do.”
And it looks like Wenk knows exactly where the story needs to begin: “You have to look at everything to soak it in, but what we’re all circling is Kraven’s Last Hunt. Whether this is the precursor to that movie, whether it will be included, we’re figuring that out. We could do it like Kill Bill, and split it into two movies. It’s all in the mix.
“What’s nice about it is, everybody wants to make the right movie, a classic movie. Nobody’s rushing to churn out a character movie just because it’s a part of that world. It’s nice to see everyone hunker down and ask ‘What’s the right movie?’”
That all certainly sounds heartening, but we’re still wondering if they can actually get Marvel to agree to having tom Holland involved? If they can’t could they put Tom Hardy’s Venom in in his place?
Or, how about they use Miles Morales? They’re bringing him to the big screen this Christmas with Into The Spider-Verse, so maybe they should capitalise on that?
As for Kraven himself, it seems there’s big plans afoot: “It’s the first time people will see Kraven, but not the last,” Wenk says.
Sounds good to us…
