Lucasfilm has announced today that actor Donald Glover, known to many audiences as college student Troy Barnes in comedy series ‘Community’ has been cast as the young Lando Calrissian in the upcoming stand-alone Han Solo movie.
Glover was also recently seen in Ridley Scott’s movie ‘The Martian’ where he played the scientist Rich Purnell. He will take over the role played in the last two of the original Star Wars trilogy by Billy Dee Williams, and joins Alden Ehrenreich (Hail Caesar) who takes the lead role previously inhabited by Harrison Ford.
The as yet untitled movie is being directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who helmed the Jump Street movies and The Lego Movie. In a statement released with the announcement, the directors said:
“We’re so lucky to have an artist as talented as Donald join us, these are big shoes to fill, and an even bigger cape, and this one fits him perfectly, which will save us money on alterations. Also, we’d like to publicly apologize to Donald for ruining Comic-Con for him forever.”
It’s probably not intentional, but we love the nod to Community through the use of ‘an even bigger cape‘ (#sixseasonsandamovie).
You can expect to see Glover in the role on the big screen in 2018 (presumably around Christmas between episodes 8 and 9 in 2017/19 respectively).
