Maleficent shocked everyone last year, taking in a massive $760 million dollars at the worldwide box office. Despite a very polarised critical reaction, it would seem that Disney is beginning to plan out a sequel to the 2014 hit.

Currently Linda Woolverton, the writer of the original, is in talks to return and write the screenplay, with Angelina Jolie expected to return to play the title role. Joe Roth will return to produce the film, though director Robert Stromberg is reportedly not directing this entry.

Personally, I am not sure how I feel about this news. While I will admit, I actually thought there were parts of Maleficent that worked, there were large chunks of the movie that dragged or changed parts of the source material for the worst. On top of all of this, where do you go after the ending of Maleficent? The ending to the film was pretty definitive with little room to craft a new story.

However, this film is still in the very early stages of development so perhaps I should adopt an ‘innocent until proven guilty policy’. At least until we have some news on what the actual story will be.
