Man, 1977 was a long time ago (the year I was born, fact fans) and we’re still grateful for being on the Star Wars journey with someone as cool as Mark Hamill AKA Luke Skywalker.
In a new open letter to the fans, Hamill acknowledges that his journey as the universe’s greatest (no matter what anyone says) Jedi is finally over.
As The Rise Of Skywalker was touted as the closing chapter in the Skywalker saga, the star gracefully steps down and thanks us all for the love and passion we’ve shown for both him and that story.
“Back in 1976, when Carrie, Harrison, and I were testing for our roles in what was then called The Adventures of Luke Starkiller, as taken from the Journal of the Whills, Saga I: The Star Wars, there’s no way we could have known what an incredibly rich and imaginative set of adventures this little space movie would launch, inspiring eight more chapters to tell the entire Skywalker story,” Hamill wrote.
“As Carrie once said, Star Wars is about family, and that is what we all have become. One giant community that shares the experience of these stories and the fundamental value they instill in us.”
“I am deeply thankful for all your continued enthusiasm and dedication to George’s faraway galaxy,” continued Hamill. “Which will continue to grow with new storytellers building an even bigger gallery, filled with heroes, villains, action, romance, and, of course, The Force.”
It’s sad to read these words because it feels wrong to say such a definite goodbye to someone so important – for many of us Star Wars formed who we are and became a very important part of our lives – but, I guess all things must end. Even of we don’t want them to.
Thank you, Mark, you will never know just how important you were to so, so many people. It’s been a ride and I’ve loved the majority of it and will continue to do so for a long, long time.
Luke… may the Force be with you. Always.
