With news and rumours flying left and right on which super-powered heroes will be making an appearance in Captain America: Civil War, it seems we’ve all overlooked just who Martin Freeman could be playing. Worry no longer though, as the name of his character has now been confirmed, and from what we can tell he’ll have a rich history with an upcoming Marvel character debuting soon.

Empire (via Squareeyed) have unveiled an exclusive image of Freeman, alongside Sharon Carter’s Agent 13 (played by Emily VanCamp, who you will no doubt remember from Winter Soldier) and stated that he will be playing Everett Ross, a character deeply connected to the story of Black Panther.

Ross’ position in the comics is as an escort to foreign diplomats upon their visits to America. This is how he came to meet T’Challa, the ruler of the fictional nation of Wakanda, who keeps the peace as Black Panther. From their, the two develop a friendship, which runs deep.

We’ve already seen Wakanda on screen in Avengers: Age of Ultron, and introduced to villain Ulysses Klaw, played by Andy Serkis.

He becomes a major adversary for Black Panther, and will no doubt have some of the focus in the hero’s upcoming solo film. It’s very interesting to see just how much setup Marvel are investing into this character’s world.

The article also features a look at Cap villain Crossbones, who is the new masked alter ego of Winter Soldier‘s returning villain Brock Rumlow:

Crossbones, Captain America Civil War

Played by Frank Grillo, he’s the guy that survived having a SHIELD helicarrier crash into him and a building fall on top. Yeah, he’s tough as nails.

It’s also worth paying attention to the German SWAT team stood behind them; the film’s setting finds Cap returning to a Germany much different to the one he saw the last time he was there. According to Empire, this will help establish the feeling of his journey coming “full circle” which sounds a little ominous to us.

Oh and, in related news, it’s also been confirmed that Pepper Potts herself, played by Gwyneth Paltrow in the Iron Man movies, will be back for the movie too.
