Matt Reeves casting a new Joker for his Batman trilogy?

June 8th, 2020 by Marc Comments

A new juicy rumour has popped up online suggesting that the DC Cinematic Universe could be set for its third Joker actor since 2016.

Matt Reeves’, whose Batman movie has finally been given the go ahead to start filming again after the lockdown caused by that damned virus, is apparently looking to cast a new version of the iconic villain for his movie.

The character was played in 2016’s Suicide Squad by Jared Leto and then last year by Joaquin Phoenix in the standalone Joker movie.

Now Reeves is looking to put the iconic smile on a new face.

There has been some debate over wether or not Reeves’ movie will be set in the same universe as Man of Steel and Batman V Superman, or if it’s a whole standalone thing – personally, I hope it’s just a throwback to a younger version of the Affleck take on Batman – but either way, a younger actor needs to be cast in the role, meaning we could likely see a Joker in his 20s… this could be a fresh take on the character, giving us young man lost in the lunacy of the Clown Prince.

The report says Joker will “appear in the second and third movies as one of the films’ multiple villains” but will be referenced in the first movie.

This lends more weight to the theories that the movie will borrow from – my favourite Batman book – The Long Halloween and will feature Arkham Asylum in a big way, with Batman visiting his rogues gallery in the movie(s).

The Batman will star Robert Pattinson as Batman/Bruce Wayne with Zoë Kravitz (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, Mad Max: Fury Road) as Selina Kyle; Paul Dano (Love & Mercy, 12 Years a Slave) as Edward Nashton; Jeffrey Wright (the Hunger Games films) as the GCPD’s James Gordon; John Turturro (the Transformers films) as Carmine Falcone; Peter Sarsgaard (The Magnificent Seven, Black Mass) as Gotham D.A. Gil Colson; Jayme Lawson (Farewell Amor) as mayoral candidate Bella Reál; with Andy Serkis (the Planet of the Apes films, Black Panther) as Alfred and Colin Farrell (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Dumbo) as Oswald Cobblepot.

The Batman opens in theaters on October 1, 2021.

Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife.
