Last month Sharon Stone told the world that she was going to have a “Wee part in a Marvel Movie”. Since that time there has been much deliberation on who exactly she will be and what film she may be seen in.
Many took it as a hint that she may be playing Janet Van Dyne, in the upcoming Ant-man and the Wasp film. Janet Van Dyne, was the original wasp and the wife of Hank Pym. We last saw the character in a flashback in Ant-man, where she sacrificed herself to stop a nuke. This would have been cool as it would have seen her reunited with her Basic Instinct co-star, Michael Douglas – although the reference would have been lot on a large part of the MCU audience.
However, new information has emerged that could throw this into question.
According to a new profile of Stone in AARP, her character is mentioned to possess some heat powers and will be a superhero. Now this doesn’t fully help matters because there are several people who could fit this description.
White Phoenix, Jubilee, Mantis, Firestar and many others all possess, or have possessed some form of pyrokinetic power, the ability to control or manipulate fire.
However, newsarama, think they may have cracked the case. Upon looking in detail at the Phase 3 films to be released in the MCU, one likely character is Abigail Brand, pyrokinetic leader of S.W.O.R.D. a sub division of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Unfortunately Brand’s first appearance was as part of the X-men comics, Astonishing X-men, and it’s unknown whether Sony or Marvel has the rights to her. She is certainly an important character and is a major supporting character of Captain Marvel, serving also as a liaison between the earthbound heroes, such as Iron Man and Captain America, and Cosmic heroes, Such as the Guardians of the Galaxy.
If Stone is playing brand then we may see her as early as The Infinity War, given that Captain marvel has been rumoured to appear in the films. Furthermore this could explain how the Guardians and all the other heroes meet to finally beat Thanos.
Although this is of course speculation, I expect we may hear more about who her character really is soon.
Captain Marvel is scheduled for a 2018 release and The Infinity War part one and two are both scheduled for a 2018 and 2019 release, respectively.
