We finally have an update on the fourth (fifth, really) Riddick movie and there are some very cool details in here.
Vin Diesel’s space-faring, capture-escaping, monster-killing anti-hero is coming back for another cinematic adventure once again from creator/writer/director David Twohy and this one is called Chronicles of Riddick: Furya.
With the news that the movie has been awarded €2m by Germany’s FFF Bayern fund for international feature films we now know that filming will take place in Bavaria, Spain and the UK.
Vin Diesel says fourth Riddick movie to film in Australia and more video games possibly coming too…
Now for the juicy details: The film sees Diesel’s anti-hero Richard B. Riddick return to his home planet of Furya to find it has been occupied by the brutal Amadak with a new threat from the Necromongers looming.
Ok, so, the Necromongers are a race of almost god-like beings who travel the galaxy taking over and enslaving planets and at one stage, during the second movie, Riddick actually became their leader before being cast out in the third outing, so having them returning is a fun detail for the movie, as is the confirmation that Riddick will make it to his homeworld but a fun detail is Amadak.
Riddick finally returns to his home world, a place he barely remembers and one he fears might be left in ruins. But there he finds other Furyans fighting for their existence against a new monster. And some of these Furyans are more like Riddick than he could have ever imagined.
Amadak first appeared in a Flash game – remember those? – that came out as promo material for Chronicles of Riddick, the second movie; the character was created by Twohy, so it seems he’s been waiting to take him int the story proper for a long time.
The character also pops up in the novel Aquilan and is described as ‘a lone outlaw in the harvesting season of ’17 who performed selfless/savage acts of bravery. In the story, Amadak allies with an army from the lower class to overthrow a butcher who ruled their land.’
Are we getting Riddick’s version of Thanos here? Whatever it is, I’ll be here for it as I believe the Riddick series is mostly being slept on by audiences and is a genuinely great slice of sci-fi fun.
“Our legion fans have demanded it for years, and now we’re finally ready to honor their call to action with Riddick: Furya. My collaboration with Vin and One Race has spanned 20 fruitful years, as together we’ve created three movies, two video games, an anime production, and motion comics for the internet. This new big-screen event will see a return to Riddick’s homeworld, where we finally get to explore Riddick’s genesis,” said Diesel.
