New standalone Predator movie in production along with Prey sequel

February 11th, 2024 by Marc Comments

Remember how, after the shockingly disappointing The Predator in 2018, we all thought the Predator franchise was dead? Well, it’s looking like it’s back from the dead with a vengeance.

After the release of Prey, a Predator prequel of sorts, on Hulu in 2022, the franchise seems to have had a sharp shock to the heart and is back, ready to dismember and skin its prey until his – and or – heart is content. It has just been revealed that a direct sequel to Prey is still in development but so too is a new, standalone Predator movie written by Prey director Dan Tractenberg who, it seems, might have just nabbed the gig to be the overseer of the Predator franchise over all.

The first Predator movie is an all-time horror/sci-fi/action classic and will never be topped but the franchise has had a bumpy road so far and was completely derailed when The Predator, written the always reliable Shane Black, was a massive disappointment to fans and viewers in general (and worse still, it ended on a cliffhanger that, should the franchise continue, I really wnt wrapped up, no matter how bad it was – I hate loose ends!) and we all thought the franchise was dead and buried until Prey came out, brought the series back to basics and gave us a fun action/sci-fi/horror that fans embraced.

Starring newcomer Amber Midthunder as Naru, the story had a young tribe girl in the 1700s Great Plains finding herself locking horn with a more primitive and vicious version of the Predator we know and love –  the sequel is expected to be the first movie in the whole franchise to have a returning lead character.

As for Trachtenberg’s new movie, currently titled Badlands, next to nothing is known though it is expected that the movie will be set in the present day or near future.

Predator has been languishing for years, threatening with each new movie to make a triumphant return, yet never reaching its heights, if Prey is the movie to turn all that around, then I’ll like it even more than I already do. But it’ll never top the original, that’s just science or something.

Oh, and speaking of the original(s), let’s not forget that Trachtenberg recently discussed the franchise’s future and the possibility of Arnold Schwarzenegger or Danny Glover, the heroes Dutch in the first Predator and Lt Mike Harrigan in Predator 2, returning to the series and it seems he’s aware that there’s been efforts to bring them back over the years: “All I’ll say is — there’s still time for those guys. They’re still around, and wouldn’t that be awesome?”

Yes, Dan, that would be very, very, very awesome.
