We’ve known Iron Man 3’s Shane Black was working on a Predator sequel for a while now, but the last time he spoke of it was last June (here). Well, now more details have emerged and remember, if it bleeds, we can kill it…

Black will direct the movie, based on his own story which will be tidied up by Monster Squad writer Fred Dekker and now, at the Television Critics Association, producer John Davis has been talking up Black’s movie and saying it will be an inventive, original take on the mythology of the franchise and it still looks like it’s NOT a reboot. Which is great news.

“I’ve read a lot of his script and I think it’s genius,” said Davis, “I think it’s genius and I think it’s entertaining, and what it did is recreate a famous franchise in a different, interesting way; looking at it from a different light. He’s just an amazing writer-director. He’s got a way of looking at this that makes you excited again. I love this franchise. It was the first movie I ever did. I remember in being in the jungle with Arnold[Schwarzenegger] as a 28-year-old and going, ‘This is a fun business!’…Shane’s amazing. He’s an amazing storyteller.”

He continued, barely able to contain his giddy enthusiasm for the project: “Shane’s got a writing partner, Fred Dekker. They’ve been doing it together and Fred’s great. The two of them together, they’ve been in the business for a long time, but the writing is so fresh, the perspective is so fresh. I’m telling you you’re going to get something you don’t expect and you’re going to say, ‘This is the most entertaining way to reinvent a franchise.’ I mean he’s the guy who wrote Iron Man 3.”

We know that the Iron Man 3 bit might excite some (most of us here at FTN loved IM3) and disgust others (not everyone did) but with Black’s other body of work – including the sublime Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang – we cannot wait to see this new take on the Predator. Because, if there’s one alien hunter out there who deserves to be updated lovingly, it’s Predator…

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
