Ron Perlman not keen to play Hellboy again… but feels they owe the fans the trilogy closer

February 3rd, 2022 by Marc Comments

Ron Perlman is famous for many roles over the years but here at FTN HQ it will always be as Hellboy in Guillermo Del Toro’s 2004 and 2008 movies.

We liked Neil Marshall and David Harbour’s take in 2019 but they were no Del Toro and Perlman.

However, the one thing that, all these years later, sucks about Del Toro and Perlman’s movies is that they were a planned trilogy and we never, sadly, got the third part of the story.

And 14 years later, we’d love to have that movie in our collection. However, Perlman while still a beast of a man and in solid condition, is 72 this year and has no desire to put the red prosthetic on again… but, like us, he still feels he has unfinished business with big red.

“Am I eager to do Hellboy 3? No, I’m 71 f@#king years old,” Perlman says, before adding: “[But] we owe this to the fans, and we should give it to them because it would be an epic conclusion. So Guillermo, if you’re reading, I’m not done pounding you to get this f@#king thing done.”

Perlman previously revealed that he had been approached about appearing in the 2019 movie (here) but had no interest if it wasn’t Del Toro directing – given how much of a flop it was, it seems he made the right choice.

“The reboot was something I had the opportunity to participate in and decided that the only version of ‘Hellboy’ I’m interested in is the one I do with Guillermo,” Perlman said at the time, “So in walking away from it, I truly walked away from it, and haven’t seen it or heard much about it. I wished them well, but it was not in my bailiwick.”

Star David Harbour feels that the fan loyalty and love for the original two movies doomed the new movie before it even filmed: “Guillermo del Toro and Ron Perlman created this iconic thing that we thought could be reinvented and then [fans] certainly — the loudness of the internet was like, ‘We do not want you to touch this.’ People were just very very against it and that’s people’s right.”

And he might be right – the movie was not as bad as everyone likes to say it is – but whatever the reason, fail it did and currently Hellboy is in, pardon the pun, purgatory with nothing happening on the immediate front but one thing is for sure, should Del Toro decide he’s back for a third bite of the cherry, Perlman, despite his age and reluctance, is all the way in.

More Hellboy from these two? Count us allllllllllllllllll the way in.
