RUMOUR: Venom or Deadpool may be set for Spider-man 3?

May 31st, 2019 by Marc Comments

Ok, so we’re in massive RUMOUR territory here, but I’d be remiss not to at least report it and have some fun, right?

Right.

So, with Spider-Man: Far From Home coming in July, we’re already looking into the future of the MCU and the newly introduced idea that there’s a multiverse (check here for details) in the Marvel cinematic universe after the devastating events of Infinity War and Endgame.

Now, before I go on, I have pushed the idea for a loooooong time now that this MCU and Sony Marvel Universes were connected (here) so i believe there could be something to the first part of this report.

I reported a while ago that Sony are planning a Kraven: The Hunter movie and the writer was instructed to put Spider-Man in the script (here) and I certainly felt that the Venom movie last year starring Tom Hardy (which I liked a lot) cold easily be inserted into he MCU as he eluded to his past in New York, so I think it’s very likely that Sony are pushing to have their movies come over to the MCU.

And it seems that may be happening with the soon to start happening Spider-man 3.

Now we reported a while ago that Spider-man’s appearances in the MCU are up after Far From Home but Tom Holland is still contracted to make another movie… if Sony wills it.

So Sony hold the cards if Spider-man is to stay in the MCU and they may be pushing their own movies as part of upcoming negotiations.

Remember Venom director Ruben Fleischer said last year at SDCC : “I think we can all agree it would be pretty amazing to see Spider-Man and Venom face off in a film. I can speak for myself when I say that I’d be very excited to go see that film.

“I have to think that the studio’s thinking the same way and that at some point down the road they’re going to run across each other’s paths.”

Indeed, Venom co-writer Jeff Pinker teased before Venom’s release: “Without revealing anything I’m not allowed to reveal, it is not impossible that in a future, upcoming Venom movie, Spider-Man will play a significant role.”

So perhaps Sony have been been banking on this for a while now?

Far From Home’s director Jon Watts has addressed the multi-verse idea and I’m guessing it may be a way to let Venom into the MCU: “We’re definitely trying to answer one of the big ones – alternate timelines,” Watts has said.

“So many possibilities opened up at the end of Endgame, and Peter Parker is one of the few people on the ground dealing with them.”

It’s certainly interesting to thing that Venom – and ultimately Miles Morales from Into The Spider-verse may exist in the MCU’s extended universe.

Speaking of other universes…

Word on the street is that Marvel are currently trying to work out how they can bring Deadpool into the MCU too.

Disney boss Bob Iger has previously hinted that while Disney/Marvel will be recasting the cast of the X-Men movies for their future integration into the MCU, Deadpool – ie Ryan Reynolds – will likely be the exception to the rule and is likely to remain as is.

So how? Well, rumour has it Marvel/Disney are looking at three options (and again, I stress this is merely rumour for now).

The options are:

  1. The third movie in the Deadpool franchise – basically an outright sequel to Deadpool 2
  2. A Deadpool series on Disney+
  3. And finally, having Deadpool pop-up in Spider-man 3

Now, while the idea of Deadpool (and Venom) appearing in the third Spider-man movie would be wonderful, the idea of the character, who until a few weeks ago belonged to Fox, appearing in the Disney/Sony crossover straight out of the gates seems… unlikely.

That said, if Deadpool and Venom were both set for the third Spidey movie they could have all my money.

Thoughts?

Peter Parker returns in Spider-Man: Far From Home, the next chapter of the Spider-Man: Homecoming series! Our friendly neighborhood Super Hero decides to join his best friends Ned, MJ, and the rest of the gang on a European vacation. However, Peter’s plan to leave super heroics behind for a few weeks are quickly scrapped when he begrudgingly agrees to help Nick Fury uncover the mystery of several elemental creature attacks, creating havoc across the continent!
