UPDATE: Ok, so after hearing from so many fans that they want him (Jonathan Frakes, aka William T. Riker from Star Trek Next Generation), No. 1 himself has given his thoughts on directing Star Trek 3:
“I’m all over it. I’m all over it.” And… “I say, unabashedly, I’d be great at it and would love to do it.”
But wait! That’s not all! Apparently, he has contacted J.J. Abrams about this, and Abrams agent has let Paramount know that Frakes wants the position. They haven’t responded as of yet, but who knows?
Original Story: After the unexpected departure of Robert Orci from Star Trek 3, the question now becomes “who will direct it?” If the fans have anything to say about it, their No.1 pick is…well, Number One.
Yes, the one and only Jonathan Frakes, aka Will Riker from Star Trek: The Next Generation. Why him? Well, don’t think this is just random fanboy suggestions. Frakes has done a bunch of directing jobs in his career, including Star Trek: First Contact. He’s also done some TV directing as well, thus making Frakes a very qualified candidate for this role.
The lengths the fans are going to in order to make this happen is amazing. They’re trending worldwide with the hashtag #BringInRiker in order to voice their desire to see this happen.
Will it though? It’s unclear, Frakes himself has not commented on this as of yet. But if he reveals he’s interested…who knows?
