Star Wars: Boba Fett and young Han Solo to get their own films

February 6th, 2013 by Marc Comments

So we all heard the news yesterday that Disney has confirmed there will be Star Wars spin off movies in addition to the new trilogy. The reports from Ain’t It Cool News claimed the new movies might focus on Yoda. Well Entertainment Weekly is reporting that according to sources close to the projects have confirmed that Disney is looking to focus on two projects in particular. Okay guys; hold onto your Stormtrooper helmets, this is huge!

One project will revolve around a young Han Solo as he learns the ropes of being a smuggler, the other would focus on Boba Fett’s bounty hunting adventures as he deals with the kind of scum you may expect to find at a Mos Eisley cantina. The sources do go on to state that it’s still early in the developmental process and things can always change, but for now this is what Disney is running with.

According to the report the Han Solo film would fit in between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, which means they will have to find a new actor to play a young Solo, while the Boba Fett film would take place somewhere in the time frame of the original trilogy, assumingly before he meets his supposed end in Return of the Jedi (Expanded Universe fans know Fett is still alive and well.). Though no one is set to play Boba Fett, thanks to the prequels we now know what he looks like, so if they plan on him taking off his helmet there is only one guy they can call, Temuera Morrison, the actor who played Jango Fett.

Simon Kinberg, the scribe behind Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes, and Empire Strikes Back writer Lawrence Kasdan have been tabbed to write the new spin off films as well as helping writer Michael Arndt draft the new trilogy. Of course there is also the possibility of the Yoda as well. Though I overflow with excitement at the prospect of a young Han Solo, his history has been written through the EU novels as well, so I hope there isn’t more rewriting of the Star Wars canon, similar to what the new trilogy will most likely do. In the EU novels Solo is given an origin of an Imperial pilot recruit who gets fed up with the Empire and strikes out on his own, picking up a Wookie co-pilot along the way. The Imperial roots are something that I would definitely include in the movie.

As far as what I would like to see in a Boba Fett movie, well that remains up in the air for now. There are a lot of different ways to go about it, though I would expect to see some familiar faces such as Jabba the Hutt, or maybe even Darth Vader who would still be alive in the time frame the movie would take place in. Well, that’s all we know for now folks. Stay with Following The Nerd as we deliver the news when it breaks.
