Superman: Man of Tomorrow kicks off new DC Animated Universe with The Long Halloween coming next with the JSA following

August 25th, 2020 by Marc Comments

With the DC Animated Universe as we knew it coming to an end with Justice League Dark: Apokolips War a few months ago (booooooooo!), we all knew that we could be set for a new universe starting. And we weren’t wrong.

With the new animated movie, Superman: Man of Tomorrow available now, director Chris Palmer has confirmed that this is the beginning of a whole new DC Universe (which kinda makes sense, given the ending of Apokolips War, really).

“The [previous] films were winding down from the previous arcs, the stories being for the past ten years for Warner Animation,” he said.

“In searching for [a way to] launch the first film [in a new universe], Superman seemed like the big character to go with.”

Man of Tomorrow goes back to the early days of Superman/Clark Kent even before he became the iconic hero and has a very bright and optimistic tone compared to the dark odyssey that Apokolips Wars was.

“This film is obviously a lighter take — Apokolips War is pretty dark, obviously — Superman in blue skies in a shiny, new Metropolis,” added Palmer.

“Even visually, there’s that feel of a new beginning, starting with a younger Clark, as well. Starting with his first year on the job rather than a well-established Superman already in the suit helps with that.”

Interestingly thought, we may know what the next two entries in the new universe are.

First up, will be Justice Society: World War II.

Fans will know that in the DC Universe the Justice Society of America (JSA) was the first major superhero team (and are currently the focus of the Star Girl TV Series and are set for the Black Adam movie) and featured Green Lantern, The Flash, Hawkman and Hawkgirl, Doctor Fate, The Sandman, Wildcat, Hourman and Starman.

It looks like the team will be uniting to fight Nazis for this outing and, at a guess, I could see this easily being a part of the new DC animated universe, acting as a prequel to Man of Tomorrow.

Next up is a movie I have waiting a long time for, well, two movies actually.

Batman: The Long Halloween, my all-time favourite Batman story, will see Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale’s tale of a mystery that haunts a full year of Batman’s life as he takes on the Holiday Killer head to the big screen and, thankfully, DC are smart enough to not trim the story down but rather spread it out over two movies, giving it the time it deserves.

Interestingly, this duology was revealed some time ago, in January 2019 (here) and was, it seems, set to be a part of the previous DC Animated Universe.

Anyway, the two parts will be released in 2021 with a period of months between.

Superman: Man of Tomorrow hit digital on August 23rd before getting a Blu-ray and DVD release on September 8.
