The second of the new wave of Star Wars movies and the first spin-off has just lost its writer…

The untitled movie which is due on December 16th, 2016 (yes, Star Wars is a Christmas thing now has lost its longest serving crew member.

THR have reported that Gary Whitta has released a statement about his departure saying: “The year I spent working with Lucasfilm on this Star Wars film has been by far the most rewarding period of my entire career. As a lifelong Star Wars fan I’m deeply grateful to have had the rare opportunity to contribute to a new chapter in its ongoing cinematic legacy. The film is going to be amazing.”

The director of the movie, Godzilla’s Gareth Edwards, said: “Gary has been a wonderful, inspired contributor and I enjoyed working with him tremendously.  I’m so grateful for all of his contributions.”

It is believed that Whitta had finished the first draft of the script.

Disney and Lucasfilm have not commented on the hiring of a new writer. Whitta is expected to move on to scripting duties on Mark Millar’s Starlight.

Whitta also tweeted the message below. We’re sure that, whatever happens, the essence of his story will be in there…

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
