Man, we’ve waited thirteen years for TRON: Ares and now it’s been pushed back again!
Director Joachim Rønning shared on his Instagram, below, to reveal that the third movie in the TRON series would be filming already but due to the WAG and SAG-AFTRA strikes over 150 crew have been laid off and the movie is delayed indefinitely.
“Today was supposed to be our first day of principal photography on ‘Tron: Ares’ (a movie subsequently about AI and what it means, and takes, to be human),” Rønning wrote on Instagram, “Instead, we are shut down with over a hundred and fifty people laid off. It’s indefinite, which makes it exponentially harder for everyone.”
The movie picks up from TRON: Legacy with starred Jeff Bridges, Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde and saw the real world and the electron world of TRON overlap with Wilde’s Quorra, a program from the computer world, finally stepping into the rel world. While Ares is set to star Jared Leto, Evan Peters, Greta Lee and Jodie Turner-Smith, there is no mention of Cillian Murphy joining the cast after he was set up in Legacy as the villain in future installments.
“The AMPTP, SAG-AFTRA and WGA need to speed up the negotiating process and not leave the table until it’s done,” Rønning continues, “This is Hollywood. We close deals for breakfast. Why do we suddenly have all the time in the world when every day is so precious? These tactics are extremely frustrating. It’s time for diplomacy so we can get back to work — under conditions that are fair to everybody.”
The plot of Areas sees Leto’s character, also a program like Quorra, coming over to the real world but little else is known at this stage.
I’m a big fan of TRON, especially the second movie and the (cancelled) animated series TRON: Uprising, so I’m excited for this movie… I just hope it still happens now.
Thoughts? I know you have them! Voice-off in the usual ways on FTN’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram
