Vin Diesel reveals second Fast & Furious spin-off franchise

January 25th, 2019 by Marc Comments

While we’re all focused on the upcoming Fast & Furious spin-off, Hobbs & Shaw, starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham, it seems Vin Diesel has been setting wheels (ahem) in motion for another franchise spin-off.

The actor posted this on Instagram earlier:

So this is confirmation that the second – of three, apparently – spinoffs will be a an-female affair.

As per the announcement, it seems Nicole Perlman, Lindsey Beer, and Geneva Robertson-Dworet are co-writers on the movie/franchise.

Perlman has a fair back catalogue already established in the sort of movies we love, having worked on Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain Marvel’s scripts. She also wrote the Detective Pikachu screenplay.

Beer wrote on Netflix’s Sierra Burgess Is A Loser, but is working on Sam Raimi’s The Kingkiller Chronicle and the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot.

Robertson-Dworet was the writer of last year’s Tomb Raider, which we really enjoyed.

Interestingly, all three ladies worked as part of the writer’s room for Hasbro’s shared universe – He-Man, Transformers, MASK etc –  so it sounds like these ladies know what’s what in the fantasy stakes.

And, despite many likely thinking otherwise, the Fast & Furious franchise has had many strong female characters who we would love to see returning/teaming up.

Obviously Michelle Rodriquez is in there, having been there from the beginning, but there’s also Eva mendes, Gal Gadot, Jordana Brewter (who was sadly pretty much written out given her character’s relationship with Paul Walker’s O’Connor), Devon Aoki, Elsa Pataky, Gina Careno, Nathalie Emmanuel, Rhona Rousey and Charlise Theron.

Now, we know some of them are ‘dead’ in the franchise… but if there’s any series outside of comics that can bring back the dead, it’s this one.

Whatever happens, we love the Fast movies here and any chance to expand that universe will be welcomed with open arms by us.

In related news, the ninth movie in the Fast & Furious franchise begins filming next month in London.

In related, related news, Dwayne Johnson just shared a new image from the set of Hobbs and Shaw:

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
