Walter Hill and Sigourney Weaver working on new Alien movie

June 21st, 2020 by Marc Comments

You may recall a few years ago – 2017 to be precise – that Neil Blomkamp came very close to getting a new Alien movie made (here).

The movie was set to bring back star Sigourney Weaver and also Aliens star Michael Biehn as it was set to basically ignore anything after James Cameron’s iconic sequel.

However, the movie wasn’t to be but now we have some details on a project that was at planning stages from producer Walter Hill.

Weaver has confirmed that she received a 50 page treatment from Hill just over a year ago and, like Blomkamp’s plan, it seems it too was looking to become basically Alien 5, but Weaver doesn’t seem keen to bring the role back, telling Empire: “I don’t know… Ridley has gone in a different direction. Maybe Ripley has done her bit. She deserves a rest.”

Now Hill has supplied an image of the script for Alien 5 which is dated… March 13th 2020, and is co-written by fellow franchise producer/screenwriter David Giler, which means it was ready to rock just before lockdown came in:

However, Hill also seems to suggest that Weaver was much more involved than she takes credit for: “Sigourney, as she has from the very beginning, is being too modest about her proven ability to pull off the idea — which is to tell a story that scares the pants off your date, kicks the ass of a new Xenomorph, and conducts a meditation on both the universe of the Alien franchise and the destiny of the character of Lt. Ellen Ripley.”

This is interesting because it is clearly being developed long after Blomkemp developed his movie and also, since it’s now owned by Disney who bought over 20th Century Fox, it’s a big uncertainty if it might actually happen… maybe that’s why it says ‘In space nobody can hear you dream’ on the script’s cover page.

With the news that Ridley Scott still has plans for a third Prometheus movie, perhaps the Alien franchise still has life left in it.

Let me know your thoughts, gang…
