The rumours about Robert Pattinson’s Batman joining James Gunn’s DCU can finally be put to bed now.
Just kidding, it’s probably even more ‘what the hell?!’ now.
So, I’ve reported on the rumours that Robert Pattinson may be joining the DCU as that universe’s Batman rather than the standalone hero he’s been in Matt Reeves’ The Batman (and, technically, The Penguin) and no, finally, writer and director of The Batman, Matt Reeves, addresses the controversy and, well, he doesn’t exactly clear it up.
Batman and Gotham City make official DCU debut and we have loads of details and news
Speaking to journalist Josh Horowitz at the recent Golden Globes, Reeves was asked if he and James Gunn had discussed bringing Pattinson over to the DCu and he answered in the resoundingly positive: “Sure, yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, it really comes down to whether or not it makes sense,” he said.
With The Batman Part II set to film this year, Reeves makes it clear that he has a Batman ‘crime saga’ that he wanted to tell and he’s going to get that but he really seems to be hinting that what comes next, is anyone’s guess: “What’s been great is there was a story that I wanted to tell that we’re calling The Epic Crime Saga which is the thrust of what we wanted to do.
The Batman II and Batman: The Brave and the Bold movies both pushed back
“It’s been important to me to be able to play that out. James and Peter have been really, really great about that and they’re letting us do that.”
Adding: “What the future brings, I can’t really tell you. I have no idea right now, except that my head is down now about getting The Batman Part II shooting and to make it something special which is, of course, the most important thing.”
Ok, so I have been reading the reactions to this interaction and some believe he’s saying absolutely not, Pattinson’s Batman is a standalone thing, while others believe he’s saying that as long as he does his planned Batman trilogy and tells his story, then yeah, Pattinson may well become the DCU Batman, standing opposite David Corenswet’s Superman.
WATCH: It’s finally here! The trailer for James Gunn’s Superman soars in!
And, speaking of Superman, I get the feeling that maybe, just maybe, the powers that be are waiting to see how Superman does when it arrives this July before confirming Pattinson’s inclusion in the DCU… or not.
I think Superman is going to be massive and I really believe that the DCU is already much further in than we had previously realised.
Thoughts?
