What?! James Gunn jumps to DC/Warners and is writing Suicide Squad 2

October 9th, 2018 by Marc Comments

Well, in the day’s biggest WTF moment, it seems that ex-Guardians of the Galaxy writer and director James Gunn has moved on after being fired by Disney.

Straight over to Warner Bros’ DC offices.

Word is that after being fired in July over old twitter posts that were, em, unfavourable, Gunn is now looking set to write Suicide Squad 2.

At this point, he’s not directing but will be writing.

Last we heard just over a year ago The Accountant director Gavin O’Connor was writing and directing the sequel (here) so we’re not sure if he’s still set to direct or not.

The script was reportedly finished a few weeks ago (here)

Gunn was fired from the third installment in his ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ franchise in July.
James Gunn is heading from Marvel to DC.

Gunn, who was fired from directing the third installment in his Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, has come on board to write Warner Bros. and DC’s Suicide Squad sequel, with an eye to helm.

Variety’s Justin Knoll has been tweeting that O’Connor’s script ended up being so similar to the in progress Birds of Prey that it had to be scrapped:

We’re hearing that it’s something of a re-imagining but we’re taking that as meaning it will focus on new characters since the core cast of the first movie have their own new corners of the DC universe with Harley heading to Birds of Prey, Deadshot rumoured for a standalone movie and we’re guessing we’ll see Captain Boomerang in The Flash movie.

Oh, and Dave Bautista – who has been very vocal about his anger over Gunn’s firing at Marvel is already throwing his name in the hat for Suicide Squad.

Honestly I don’t think Gunn is a good fit for the DC Cinematic Universe, although if he was, it would be a movie like this that would work for him. But I was excited to hear Joss Whedon was working on Justice League… and look how that turned out.

What say you all?
