Where will Dwayne Johnson’s Luke Hobbs movie fit in the Fast & Furious’ future?

July 23rd, 2023 by Marc Comments

When it was announced last month by the man himself, Dwayne Johnson, that a standalone Luke Hobbs movie was coming that would tie into the story of Fast x (here), the fans were excited… but puzzled.

Johnson has famously said that he’s done with the Fast franchise and, in particular, Vin Diesel, bug after the failure of Black Adam, it looks like he’s happy to come back to the series… but will he still work with Diesel?

Well, maybe not.

At the end of Fast X, the movie’s villain, Dante, played by Jason Momoa, was hunting down Dom Toretto’s (Diesel) team for killing his father in the fifth movie, but in an after credit scene, we see that he’s also hunting Luke Hobbs (Johnson), the man who ultimately pulled the trigger.

So the fans assumed that in the next movie we’d see Hobbs and Toretto team up to fight a mutual enemy… but hold up.

Dwayne Johnson announces new standalone Luke Hobbs movie

We have since learned that the Hobbs movie would also star Momoa’s Dante and will occur alongside the next Fast & Furious movie… but could this mean that the two movies will not overlap?

Personally, I think that we’ll see Johnson’s movie happen and at the end, for the final movie, have the two come together to fight Dante.

However, with Fast X being fun but nit received as well as it could have been – I mean, these movies (which I unashamedly love) have left all reality behind a long time ago but the last two in particular have gone waaaaaaaaaay past any sense of plausibility) – Diesl recently took to social media (below) to let the fans know that their input was important in forming the last movie(s) and they are currently mining the lore of the series to break a satisfying end to the saga: “The conversation never stops. 5am, Caymen Islands. And the world would never realize that we’re here dissecting the mythology of Fast, going over it. Going over all of the feedback from our incredible fans and how much we’re just enjoying being in this creative dojo,” Diesel says in the video below along with Han star
Sung Kang.

Vin Diesel says female-led Fast and Furious still coming and a Torettos movie could be on the way too

“So much inspiration and time to reflect. And to talk and work out [Fast X: Part 2] and to double check all the aspects that need to be hit, and this kind of scary path that we’re going on for Part 2 for Fast X. We’re done with our press tour and now we have time to go back to building and that’s so much fun. We take it seriously because we know how important it is to all of you.”

We know that the next movie will see Fast X director Louis Leterrier and also the new fan favorite Dante be back to torture the Toretto extended family and, possibly, Hobbs, but I really hope that with such a long history, spin-offs and an animates show all under the belt, they can bring the story home and give it a satisfying ending for all the fans out there.

Thoughts? I know you have them! Voice-off in the usual ways on FTN’s FacebookTwitter and Instagram
