One of the standout characters of the animated MCU show What If…? was the late Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa who, instead of being Black Panther in the show, is the multiverse’s Star-Lord.
The role was notable for being Boseman’s last appearance in the MCU after his tragic death last year and, for that reason, was an emotional watch for many fans.
However, it seems that Marvel was well aware of how good T’Challa Star-Lord was and indeed, there was a plan for a lot more of the character.
Season 1 finale, director Bryan Andrews has revealed that a spinoff starring Boseman in the role was at the planning stage before the young actor’s passing.
“Chadwick had recorded his Star-Lord T’Challa stuff early,” Andrews says.
“But we had those later episodes that he appeared in sporadically, and it was a long stretch before we got him [again]. And it was not long after the final recording that he passed. I think it was maybe just a few months or a month. None of us knew, obviously. But we got him in time to have everything [for Season 1]. I think he was also trying to make an effort because T’Challa was so important to him – and also this new version of Star-Lord T’Challa was so important to him. He dug it.”
He goes on: “I don’t know if he knew this, but there was planning to have Star-Lord T’Challa spin off into his own show with that universe and crew.
“We were all very excited. We know he would have loved it, too. And then, you know, he passed, and so all that’s in limbo. So, who knows? Maybe one day.”
We suppose at this stage it comes down to whether or not Marvel/Disney would cast another voice actor in the role, I mean, many of the characters in the show are voiced by the original actors but many aren’t… however, it could be seen as disrespectful to the actor’s memory.
Personally, I don’t think the series will ever see the light of day, and rightfully so but it does have us wondering if a T’Challa series was being considered, are other of the What If…? characters set for spinoffs too?
It’s a big universe out there… although not so bright as it was with Boseman in it.
Let us know your thoughts. Should they go ahead with the spin-off? Let me know.
