Black Lightning to end after upcoming fourth season

November 24th, 2020 by Marc Comments

Hot on the heels that The CW may be gearing up to give us a Painkiller spinoff series (here) from Black Lightning which will be set up in the upcoming series four, it seems things aren’t looking as good for Black Lightning itself.

Along with its sister and brother shows, Supergirl and Arrow, Black Lightning is the third series in the so called Arrowverse to be cancelled with the upcoming season 4 set to be its last.

There is still no word on whether or not some of the core cast will make it into the Painkiller series as of yet.

Series creator Salim Akil said: “When we first started the Black Lighting journey, I knew that Jefferson Pierce and his family of powerful Black Women would be a unique addition to the super hero genre. The love that Blerds and all comic book fans around the globe have shown this series over the past three seasons proved what we imagined, Black People Want To See Themselves in all their complexities

“Thank you to the phenomenal cast, writers and crew without whom none of this would’ve been possible”I’m incredibly proud of the work we’ve been able to do and the moments we’ve been able to create in bringing DC’s first African-American family of super heroes to life for the culture. I’m very grateful to Peter Roth, Warner Bros. TV, Mark Pedowitz, The CW Network and Greg Berlanti for their partnership and support of my vision at every step of this journey. While Season Four may be the end of one journey, I’m extremely excited to usher in a new chapter and continued collaboration with The CW as we tell the story of Painkiller.”

Black Lightning, played by Cress Williams, was made a founding member of the Justice Society at the end of last year’s massive Crisis on Infinite Earths event along with Supergirl, however it seems TV executives – rather than DC’s rogues gallery – have trimmed the league before they faced their first big villain together as an established team.

That said, the nature of the massive, interconnected Arrowverse means that stars of cancelled shows are never beyond appearing in other series or events, so this need not be the end of either story per se.

What say you all? I want to hear your thoughts, gang…

Black Lightning returns to The CW in early 2021.

Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife.
