The ‘Brandon Routh might return as Superman’ rumour is back and I’m here for it all!
You’ll likely know that Routh played Superman/Clark Kent in 2006’s Superman Returns, a sequel to the first two Richard Donner Superman movies that saw Routh step into the red hero boots of the great Christopher Reeve and, while the movie wasn’t a big hit, Routh did great work i the role has become a much-loved incarnation of the Man of Steel.

So loved in fact that when The CW’s Arrowverse shows did the Crisis on Infinite Earth story in 2019, Routh returned to the role of Superman, portraying him closer to the darker Kingdom Come version of the character but undoubtedly, the same character we met in 2006 on Earth-96.
It wasn’t long after that rumours started appearing that Routh may return in his own Superman limited series but a couple of years later, the Arrowverse came to an end and it seemed that that was no longer likely to happen.
Until now, when Arrowverse executive producer Marc Guggenheim replied to a fan on Twitter/x, hinting that Routh may yet return. Again:

Curiously, Guggenheim talks about this now with Superman & Lois, the last of the Arrowverse (adjacent) shows is about to come to an end.
In Crisis, we learned that Routh’s Superman was unable to stop the Joker from attacking The Daily Planet, killing everyone he loved and leading to the darker take on the character and hinting – yay! – that this was the same universe as Keaton’s Batman (we’re guessing that, if true, another Joker eventually came to be after the character’s death in Batman ’89); this would be a great story to tell in a limited series with Routh’s Superman going up against Joker and perhaps even seeing Batman appear.
Look, honestly, I think this is very unlikely to happen and we have been here before but I for one, loved Routh’s Superman and would love to see him get another bite of the cherry and with James Gunn saying that there will be DC projects outside the main DCU, I think it’s certainly something that could be considered.
