CONFIRMED: Yes, that’s James Earl Jones back as the voice of Darth Vader in Obi-Wan Kenobi series

June 2nd, 2022 by Marc Comments

He’s back and sounding better than ever! Yes, it’s been confirmed that the legendary James Earl Jones, despite his age of 91, is back as the voice – the terrifying voice – of Darth Vader in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series.

Vader returned in style in this week’s third episode of the Disney+ series in wicked style and many fans, myself included, were wondering if Jones was the one doing the voice or if they’d used a computer program as they have with Luke in The Mandalorian and the answer, we’re delighted to report is no, that’s really Jones doing the voice and sounding even better than he did when we last heard him in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Jones has been voicing everyone’s favourite Sith Lord ever since Star Wars – as it was then called – hit the screen in 1977 and he’s still delivering the goods to this day. Amazing.

Series showrunner and director Deborah Chow said of bringing Vader back a while ago that it wasn’t something to be taken lightly or just because you could, adding: “When we started really looking at Obi-Wan’s life and saying, ‘Who’s important in his life? What in his past has affected him?’ so much of that connects back to Anakin.”

Hayden Christensen is also back as Vader, playing the Sith Lord when he is without his iconic armour. Bliss.

As much as we love new Star Wars characters, it’s so great to see all the ones we loved growing up and still today returning. Well, played, Disney, well played.

The story begins 10 years after the dramatic events of “Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith” where Obi-Wan Kenobi faced his greatest defeat—the downfall and corruption of his best friend and Jedi apprentice, Anakin Skywalker, who turned to the dark side as evil Sith Lord Darth Vader. The series stars Ewan McGregor, reprising his role as the iconic Jedi Master, and also marks the return of Hayden Christensen in the role of Darth Vader.

Joining the cast are Moses Ingram, Joel Edgerton, Bonnie Piesse, Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Varma, Rupert Friend, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Sung Kang, Simone Kessell and Benny Safdie. “Obi-Wan Kenobi” is directed by Deborah Chow and executive-produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Michelle Rejwan, Deborah Chow, Ewan McGregor and Joby Harold

Obi-Wan Kenobi arrives on May 25th 27th on Disney+.
