As 2014 begins, series 8 of Doctor Who is set to go into production, and more spoilers have surfaced regarding what’s in store…
Although we know the latest series will feature new Doctor Peter Capaldi (who, unlike previous Scottish actors David Tennant and Sylvester McCoy, will be keeping his accent in the role) and the returning Jenna Coleman as incumbent companion Clara, a host of other familiar faces will be returning alongside them. According to Steven Moffat, the first episode of the new series will feature Neve McIntosh as Madame Vastra, Catrin Stewart as Jenny Flint, and Dan Starkey as Strax.
“This time I’ve made sure we’ve got a bunch of characters around him so that we can have a new Doctor introduced and we can push that Doctor a bit further if you’ve got a familiar world around him,” said Moffat according to Doctor Who TV.
In addition, fan favorite River Song could return, according to actress Alex Kingston. “I look forward to sharing more of her with you in the future, but…spoilers!” said Kingston in a YouTube video last October.
In addition to Steven Moffat, spoilers also confirm that series 8 will feature familiar writers like Mark Gatiss, Neil Cross, and Gareth Roberts. Neil Gaiman, Chris Chibnall, Tom MacRae, and Jack Lothian are also possible writers for the upcoming series, but have not been confirmed.
Reportedly, filming began today, January 6, and so far three directors have been tapped for the upcoming series: Ben Wheatley, Paul Murphy, and Douglas Mackinnon.
Each director will reportedly helm two episodes each, but with 13 episodes planned for series 8, more directors will be announced as 2014 continues.
