Isn’t odd that one of the most exciting reveals in all of sci-fi fandom is what outfit someone is going to wear? I mean, if you really think about it?
We don’t care about odd, every time a new Doctor is cast for Doctor Who, the outfit is always one of the things we look forward to most as it always feels it gives us our first real feel for who – or Who? – our favorite Time Lord will be this time and, I have to say, new Doctor Ncuti Gatwa’s new outfit doesn’t disappoint.
The star, who is expected to debut at Christmas time next year, will play the fifteenth Doctor after it was confirmed that returning David Tennant is a new Doctor and counts as number fourteen (here), and he’ll be under the guidance of (also returning) Russell T Davies, the man who brought Doctor Who back in 2005 to become the phenomenon it always should have been and, after a choppy few years under Chris Chibnall (although he delivered the goods in The Power of the Doctor (here), Jodie Whittaker’s final appearance as the Time Lord, em, Lady) and, honestly, we could not be more excited for it all!
You can get a full look at Gatwa’s new look below along with new companion Ruby, played by Millie Gibson and it’s really nice to see some vibrant colour back in the Doctor’s wardrobe… I expect comic-cons to be full of orange jumpers henceforth.
Speaking to Doctor Who Magazine recently, Davies confirmed that series 14 Gatwa’s first series, will be eight episode but we shouldn’t panic at how short it is: “Okay, that’s fewer episodes than the last full season. But give us time. We have plans, and that’s a promise!”
On top of this, Davies confirmed the return of the Doctor Who Christmas special (yes!) for 2024 and, it seems, as suspected, 2023 (when Gatwa is expected to pick up from Tennant): “For the first time ever, I’m writing a Christmas Special… at Christmas! And this isn’t for next year, no, the 2023 script has been long since signed-off. The new one is for end-of-year 2024!”
A short while ago we heard rumours that Doctor Who foes such as the Daleks and Sontarans will be getting their own shows, expanding the universe and developing what happens when the Doctor isn’t around to screw their plans up. We’ve known for a while that Davies believes Doctor Who should be an empire of shows, like Star Wars or Marvel, and it seems he’s getting ready to explore all of that – he gave us Torchwood, class, K-9 and The Sarah Jane Adventures under his run originally, so he’s no stranger to the concept: “It takes a while to get the empire in shape, but that’s a serious plan: annual Doctor Who, no gap years, lots of content, on and on.”
I love the outfit, I cannot wait to see what Gatwa brings to the role and I’m certainly excited for Davies’ return and the Doctor Who Expanded Universe which, now that Who is going to be a jewel in the Disney+ crown as was as the BBC’s, should be something special, indeed.
Bring on 2023 and 2024, the fans are ready!
